Arkansas Veterans’ Commission Kicks off New Year
The Arkansas Veterans’ Commission held its first meeting of the New Year on Monday, January 6, at the Arkansas Military and First Responders Academy in Little Rock.
Outgoing Commission Chairman Jason Smedley received the “Iron Mike Award” to recognize his hard work on behalf of Arkansas Veterans.
Smedley expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve in the leadership role. “Working with the Commission has been amazing. Having the support of the other commissioners has led to the success of what we’ve been able to do. I’m honored to be able to continue to serve on the Commission and to continue serving Veterans.”
The Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA) Secretary Robert Ator was introduced at the meeting, where he discussed his goals and priorities for the agency. “We owe it to our Veterans to provide the best services for assisted living and cemetery operations, and we will not fail in that mission,” Ator said. “We also intend to increase our outreach efforts to transitioning service members to educate them about every available benefit they’ve earned.”
Incoming Commission Chairman Paul Mlakar discussed the upcoming legislative session. He encouraged each Commissioner to contact local lawmakers to prioritize veterans' challenges. Mlakar said he is excited about the upcoming year.
“I am humbled and honored to be stepping into the role as Chairman, and I’m looking forward to getting to work, Mlakar said.
The Arkansas Veterans’ Commission meets quarterly to discuss issues facing Veterans. The Governor of Arkansas appoints each Commissioner. The next meeting is scheduled for April 2025.
